I think her skin looks dewy & glowing because she may not have had central air, lol. The Whitr House didn't get it until about 1950. Another thought is some of their moisturizers were kinds greasy feeling and left that effect, at least from what I recall of my grandmother's stuff.

Weren’t there makeup tutorials in the 40s, like even way back in the 20s, y’know when makeup became “acceptable” and popular?

To avoid the nail issue if you have to use your fingers, just bend your finger and use your knuckle. I'm sure I'm not the only person to think of this seeing as how many people have long nails, but I'm not reading thousands of comments to see.

Girl, my great grandfather is 95, and doing well. My daughter was his first great great grandchild. He met my great grandmother in Australia where he was stationed in ww2. Sadly about 15 years ago my grandmother passed away. But, I see him frequently. My father just showed me the letter that my grandmother never sent, it was telling him that she was pregnant with my Dads mom. I wish I could show some pictures on here, you would appreciate it. 😇😍 at 30, I still have a great grandfather. My daughter will be 9 in December, so she'll never forget him. They have so many good stories from their day.

We were all about the fingers and sponge tip applicators when I learned to do makeup in the 80s.

I laughed because this was pretty how my mom did her makeup when I was a kid. (I still have my parents’ Newsweek from July 29, 1969 with Neil Armstrong on the cover. I remember us getting it in the mail.). And kudos to Grandma! My grandma, dad’s mom, passed not quite 4 years ago. She was 107.

I’ll bet this film was shown in a high school health class or some such where the girls were separated from the boys. And yes, the brushes for mascara really were that small (it came in a compact and you wet it) and by the mid-70s, shadows came with the little sponge things. I remember my sister sneaking my mom’s pearly green eyeshadow to school on picture day in 2nd grade. (It did not go over well with my parents.) You remind me of Patty when she was young—all about the makeup. Me? I was the dorky, older sister who tried to wear makeup in high school and usually did it badly. (Picture pink stripes on my cheeks for blush.)

I did manage to not look like an idiot for my school dances, but I also wasn’t going to be called a beauty either, where makeup was concerned. It wasn’t until I went to a Clinique counter in college that someone finally schooled me how to look like a well put-together young woman. Thank heavens for YouTube now! Having tutorials for how to make my cosmetics work on me now have kept me from once again looking like an idiot.
